An Ode to my Brother Sweswe.... Binyavanga Wainaina...

Image
Binyavanga and Chiqy  Love Lives here RIP Dear Sweswe, What I wouldn’t give for you to walk in here with that bellow laugh of yours and loud voice....calling out my name. “Chiqy, sasa!?” Thank you for being an amazing big brother. For pushing me to be true to myself no matter what. You were so good at ordering us around to take care of ourselves and very bad at listening to the same advice. And we love you because you are love itself. You saw the power that creativity and freedom could offer and spent your life sharing this vision with others. You taught us to find and most importantly listen to our inner voice and let that voice speak its truths. And even when the voice told us difficult things and surfaced the inner conflicts we battled within ourselves. We love you for this because you knew that love not hate would transform this world. You challenged us to push back and question institutions of power that obscure and dull us; that erase our sense individ...

Standing Bare, Naked and True...Love lives there...

Sited in my garden today...Blue Porterweed I am loosely aware of a new bounce in the energy of my step. Also of the lessons and practice of saying ENOUGH to certain whiffs of bullshit - mine and others. This has slowly planted root in my day to day life and given me a new spaciousness I never knew existed in my heart and in my mind.   And to be honest, today I wake up with a wonderful sense of freedom of letting go of seriously compacted bullshit I have harboured  for a while.  And wow it feels good, empty and strangely calm.  Enough with the puns...or not... And so more and more I am recognising the patterns of life that I occupy with loved ones around me. How love ignites and stays smouldering and how the unsavoury emotions people conjure are sprinkled along my path.   And going deeper into this, my inner eye has began to discern and truly understand how our human nature and desire sometimes wants to control situations and people…and...

An Ode and a Battle Cry for #CarolineMwatha

Image
You will kill crush & burn us Bury us in unmarked pits To silence our noise. But one day our restless crushed bones blood and dreams will ripple rip and rise. And we the dirt of the earth shall remain rich with memories to nurture the gardens where souls will remember.   And, demand... demand to roam free for safer longer lives than ours...   Because the price we pay to rid our lands our bodies and our minds from the clutches of oppression is so high.... we feel this gut wrenching today and our tears are saltier cutting our sores, our cries are raw and our chests are heaving with pain.   But one day, one day we promise will we will reap the rewards of our stomped on bodies.... that those small specks of dust you reduced us to, even death cannot stop the convergence into fertile dirt of many unspoken battle cries stifled... those cries will get louder and louder as more of us become casualties of this war of oppression...emptying our bat...

Violence by Any Other Name....

Image
Violence..  When we talk about living in a culture of violence it is important that recognise that this will manifest in different ways and in our day to day lives. For instance, I have watched people who do not take no for an answer; they simply keep asking and asking and asking... and are tone deaf to see that this isn’t a consenting person at the other end, but simply someone worn down to the bone. I have seen people who bombard past lover’s lives; trying to undermine any hope of their moving on.... Incessantly obsessing about their movements, associations and developments. I have also watched hurt and disgruntled ex-lovers in so much pain there whole lives are defined by what was done to them... every waking minute is spent angry, regretful or in tears, a kind of paralysis...life stands still for them yet the rest of the whole world has moved on... it becomes the way we are instinctively  distrusting of our friends, associations and potential partners and some...

The Journey of Me

Image
Self portrait - Oct 2018 In this my fortieth year, a very significant year.... I acknowledge the many experiences that serve as deep lessons. Two stick out. On health, wellness and caring for the self.  I started the year quite unwell from running myself to the bone with non-stop working, travelling and being in service and care for everyone except myself. My body and my mind came crashing to a halt and I was rudely reminded how frail life really is. Shuttling back and forth along hospital corridors, in between tough medical regimes, battle exchanges with my angry body, firm and candid conversations with doctors made things clear.   In order to live and live fully, not just the simple motions of day to day rigours...   I needed to really prioritise where, why and how I got to spend my finite energy and time in this embodiment and in my remaining time on earth. And you know what, I chose to prioritise things, experiences and people that are inherently ki...

My Love, The Universe is Yours and Mine....

Image
You . I see you. I feel   stirrings…. I whisper your name Conjure your memory… And vividly taste your lips Soft, sublime… Unreal… but the sensations   Oh those are so real my love Goosebumps I bite my lip   Just at the thought   Of those lips and what they do,  and say, and play…. One look at your gaze With eyes like the moon Sultry slits or wide-eyed and endless pools I drown in the gaze of your eyes my love, And I see and feel everything You possess in you… I consume the universe you offer With those eyes that speak to me And intoxicate me …. And of course there is your smile   That melts all my insides That I live for that smile is a truth I am incomplete without that joy you capture in that wide grin that lights your face and everything around you And, I know right then That with you by my side   Life and after-life is possible And when our bodies merge  writhing ...
